About Us

Formed in 1950, Torbay Motor Club has about 230 members from Torbay, Devon, the Westcountry and farther afield. Its committee and sub-committees organise and run motorsport events throughout the year and have a depth of experience and expertise amongst its members to guide new competitors or prospective officials towards gaining licences for their choice of role in the sport. A monthly magazine – ‘Missfire’ - and a regularly updated website keep members informed of all the club’s activities, together with articles on a wide range of motoring topics.

The club currently promotes and organises the following major events each year, most of which are qualifying rounds of regional, club and venue-specific championships.

The Torbay Classic Reliability Trial: This comprises competitive sections of unsealed lanes and by-ways, usually steep, muddy, rutted and/or rocky, on which the challenge is for competitors to reach the farthest point of the section without stopping. Choosing the best line and car control are the key skills, with the cars, motorcycles and combinations often travelling at under 5 m.p.h. to successfully negotiate particularly difficult sections. The competitive sections are linked by transit sections on the public road, and the event usually covers a total distance of about 65 miles in the area to the west of Exeter.

Autocross - Spring and Autumn: These are weekend events, typically in East Devon in April and September, and are the first and final rounds of the South-West’s regional championship. Competitors start in pairs or in a batch of four cars on a loose-surface track laid out on a grass or stubble field but are timed individually. Each heat – of three or four per day - comprises multiple laps, and competitors’ best heat times on each day are added together for the results.

The Torbay Trial and both Autocross events can be entered with a free-of-charge ‘RS Clubman’ competition licence.

Wiscombe Hill Climb: a one-day speed event for a wide variety of classes, divided by their level of modification and engine capacity. Cars and motorcycles are timed individually to one-hundredth of a second on a 1 km uphill asphalt course in the lovely setting of Wiscombe Park, near Sidmouth in East Devon, with one practice and three timed runs. This event requires competitors to hold an ‘Interclub’ competition licence and a higher standard of personal safety equipment; guidance and information is available from club members.

Clay Pigeon Sprint: the club’s one event outside, Devon, this is also a one-day speed event, with similar classes as for hill climb events, but on a flat asphalt circuit at Clay Pigeon Raceway near Dorchester, Dorset. Cars are timed individually to one-hundredth of a second on a one-and-three-quarter lap course, with one practice and three timed runs; the best time of the three timed runs decide the order for awards.

Breakfast Club: in addition to our major competitive events, the also club organises regular social get-togethers in the form of their Sunday morning meetings, from the Autumn through to the Spring, before the competition season starts in earnest.

Marshalling: close to the action, marshals are a vital part of our organising team and the safety management of events. Duties include start-line positioning of cars, course safety flag, penalty recording and paddock organisation. No special equipment is necessary, but high-viz orange overalls are strongly recommended at some speed events.

Tours: these are (usually) Sunday social events with no competitive element, designed for club members, friends and others to enjoy a day out in their cars using the scenic roads of Devon and neighbouring counties. They are usually ‘themed’, with visits to places of interest, and a coffee stop, along the way. An easy-to-follow route description is provided in a ‘road-book’, with the route also laid out alongside in a diagram format – an easy introduction to navigation for aspiring rally navigators.

The club has long history of winning awards, from the ultimate accolade of ‘No. 1 Motor Club in the country’ – the governing body’s prestigious “Club of The Year” trophy – to multiple ‘Club of the Year’, Speed Event of the Year’ and ‘Autocross of the Year’ awards in the Association of South Western Motor Club Championships.

Club motorsport takes many forms and Torbay Motor Club promotes as broad a spectrum as possible to suit all preferences and budgets. Anyone wishing to have fun in their road car is as equally well catered for as those with a more ambitious outlook.
