As Scrutineers, maintaining independence when inspecting vehicles is an important part of the role. This means being aware of situations where a conflict of interest could arise, or where an inspection might be perceived as lacking impartiality.

Scrutineers must not inspect their own vehicles for the issue, renewal or amendment of any Motorsport UK vehicle document. This includes Vehicle Passports, CAT 2 SRVIFs, HRVIFs and any other document requiring a Scrutineer inspection.

The same applies to vehicles belonging to close family members, relatives or friends, or where other circumstances could create a perceived conflict of interest. In these situations, another eligible Scrutineer should carry out the inspection.

There may also be occasions when it’s worth taking a moment to understand the circumstances behind an inspection request. For example, if you’re approached through a personal relationship, asked to travel well beyond your usual area, or become aware that a vehicle document has been difficult to obtain or complete locally.

This doesn’t mean you can’t assist outside your normal area, as there may be perfectly legitimate reasons for doing so. However, where circumstances are unusual, or there are existing questions about a vehicle’s technical compliance or eligibility, it’s good practice to establish the background before proceeding.

In these situations, contacting the Motorsport UK Technical Team before carrying out the inspection can help clarify the circumstances and ensure the inspection process remains independent, consistent and informed.

Ultimately, it’s not just about whether you can carry out an inspection, but whether you’re the appropriate person to do so.
