Following the information shared in September’s Scrutineers’ Bulletin (250), we’re providing further guidance to help Scrutineers and other event Officials respond to the increasing use of Smart, Camera and AI Glasses.
Under National Competition Rule Chapter 9, Article 9.4, aftermarket camera devices fitted to or within a helmet are prohibited. This includes Smart and AI Glasses, as the National Competition Rule only permits glasses for the sole purpose of eyesight correction and/or sun protection, as set out in Chapter 6, Appendix 2, Article 6.7.
Any Smart, Camera or AI Glasses are therefore prohibited in competition.
When identifying this equipment, Scrutineers should take a proportionate, best-endeavours approach. There is no expectation to routinely inspect competitors’ spectacles or identify technology that is not readily apparent.
However, where there is a reasonable indication that prohibited equipment is being used, this should be addressed through the normal scrutineering process.
We recognise that this technology is becoming increasingly discreet and may not always be easy to identify. The guidance is intended to support a practical and proportionate approach to enforcement.
