Motorsport marshalling is an exciting way to experience UK motorsport from a unique perspective – and it’s easy to get involved.

Anyone can become a flag, incident, pitlane or assembly marshal – and you can get involved in a variety of disciplines, including circuit racing, stage rallies, hill climbs and sprints. There are also opportunities to build your skills and join specialist safety and recovery operations.

All local motor clubs welcome volunteer marshals to help at events – but there are also specialist clubs across the UK that can help you find events, access training and learn from experienced volunteers along the way.

There is a whole host of clubs looking for new members, here are a few and what they do:

British Motorsports Marshals Club (BMMC)

Location: Nationwide, with regional centres
Website: www.marshals.co.uk

Founded in Birmingham in 1957, they are the oldest marshalling club in the UK, and provide training, grading and volunteering opportunities at events nationwide and is a great starting point for newcomers looking to gain experience across all four-wheel motorsport disciplines.

The BMMC supports and trains volunteer marshals across circuit racing, rallying, sprints, hill climbs and other disciplines.

British Rally Marshals Club (BRMC)

Location: Nationwide, seven regions
Website: www.brmc.org.uk

The BRMC specialise in supporting road and forest stage rallies as marshals, radio crews, stage commanders, timekeepers and senior officials.

Founded in 1980 with the mission of promoting ‘Safer Motor Sport’, the Club continues to promote that message and coordinates volunteering across seven regions.

This club is particularly suited to anyone looking to develop skills within stage operations and safety.

Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club (SMMC)

Location: Scotland
Website: www.smmc.org.uk

Moving north of the border, the SMMC are Scotland’s dedicated motorsport marshalling club, covering all four-wheel disciplines from hill-climbing to rallying. They provide opportunities to develop practical marshalling skills and aims to improve safety for competitors, officials and spectators across the country.

With specialised subject areas such as safety radio marshals, and rescue, extrication and medical teams, they are a leading force in providing marshal training.

With the World Rally Championship returning to Scotland for the first time in 25 years in September 2027, there has never been a better time to become a marshal.

Association of Motor Sport Recovery Operators (AMRO)

Location: UK-wide specialist network
Website: www.amro.org.uk

AMRO represents specialists in vehicle recovery, rescue assistance and incident management, all key roles within the event safety team.

Formed in 1995 to promote the continued need for the expertise and skill of vehicle recovery, they are now the leading motorsport recovery operators in the UK, providing expert recovery services on all types of motorsport events from Clubman to International level.

AMRO pride themselves on being able to safely recover vehicles from the most inaccessible places.
