Motorsport is for everyone, regardless of background, ability or the challenges they may face. For British Touring Car Championship driver Nicolas Hamilton, the journey into racing has been anything but conventional, but his story is proof that a passion for motorsport can open doors once thought impossible.

Born with cerebral palsy, specifically spastic diplegia, Hamilton has faced challenges throughout his life. Having previously used a wheelchair, the prospect of getting behind the wheel of a racing car was something he believed would never be possible.

“I originally was in a wheelchair, and now I race cars. I never believed I’d ever be able to race a car or even drive a road car, and here I am racing cars, so it’s a real personal achievement.”

However, determined to pursue his passion for motorsport, Hamilton began his racing journey in the Renault Clio Cup Championship in 2011, where he competed in a specially modified car to accommodate his disability.

From there, he worked his way up through the ranks, eventually reaching the British Touring Car Championship, being the first disabled person to do so, demonstrating that disability does not have to prevent someone from pursuing their motorsport ambitions.

For Hamilton, motorsport represents far more than competition. It has provided him with a sense of achievement, freedom and purpose, allowing him to do something he once thought was beyond his reach.

“I love putting my helmet on, and I love being in the car. The cars are incredible to drive. Motorsport is so important in a lot of people’s lives, and especially for me, with my disability.”

His journey highlights how motorsport can provide opportunities for people from all walks of life, can discover a passion, challenge themselves and achieve their goals.

And for those considering getting involved in motorsport for the first time, Hamilton has a simple message: enjoy the experience, believe in your passion and give it everything you’ve got.

“My advice to anyone that wants to get into motorsport is firstly, you’ve got to enjoy it. The moment you don’t enjoy it, you’ve got to go and do something else, and if you’re passionate about motorsport, you’ve got to give it 110%.”

From taking his first steps into racing with a modified Renault Clio to competing at the highest level of British touring car racing, Hamilton’s story serves as a reminder that there is no single pathway into motorsport.

Whether behind the wheel, volunteering, officiating or getting involved in a local motor club, there are opportunities for people of all abilities and backgrounds to become part of the motorsport community.

For Hamilton, that opportunity has been life changing.

“Once you start, you can’t stop, and it’s become my purpose and the reason why I’m here. I absolutely love it and wouldn’t change it for the world.”
