The world of hill climbing and sprinting was deeply saddened when Ian Beningfield passed away after a short illness on the 11th May 2026.
Ian packed a lot into his life. He started competing in 2010 with the MG Car Club Speed Championship, following his father Keith (a fine competitor himself) with a love of all things MG. Ian maintained very close links with the MGCC Speed Championship, being a committee member, Club Chair for period and also taking the role of Deputy Clerk of the Course for the September MGCC event at Wiscombe. Ian was also a key member of the Classic Marques Sports Car Club, being Club Treasurer, Charity Coordinator and an active member of the club committee. Prior to competing he was an incident marshal at national speed events in the early 2000s, so he engaged with motorsport in many roles.
Ian will be remembered as a committed competitor; many will have seen him at maximum attack in his MG Midget, cornering on the door handles. He was a regular award winner with Classic Marques in the MG and Historic Classics classes.
Outside of motorsport Ian was Head of Partnerships and Funding at the Meningitis Research Foundation, and his loss is felt deeply within their organisation.
Ian was great competitor, a friend to many, and someone to admire in the world of club motorsport. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the speed world in general.
