Evans and Rowland top World Championship tables
In what was a sublime weekend for British motorsport, Elfyn Evans and co-driver Scott Martin won WRC Rally Sweden while Oliver Rowland won the Jeddah E-Prix.
Moreover, after the opening two rounds, Evans now enjoys a healthy lead in the FIA World Rally Championship standings and Rowland tops the FIA Formula E World Championship table after four of 16 fixtures.
It was a great weekend for the Brits in Jeddah, with four drivers occupying the top four spots. Close after Rowland, Taylor Barnard, a 2024 Motorsport UK Academy graduate, started P21 and finished P2. Jake Hughes and Jake Dennis, both former Motorsport UK Academy drivers, took third and fourth.
Over in Sweden, Evans’ tenth WRC victory was one of his most impressive to date, raising hopes that the Welshman could finally lift the World Rally Championship after finishing runner-up no fewer than four times in the past. Should he finally succeed, Elfyn will emulate Colin McRae and Richard Burns to become the UK’s third World Rally Champion.
Arriving in Sweden brimming with confidence from an impressive second place finish in Monte Carlo, Evans was among the pacesetters throughout and he started Sunday’s concluding timed sections holding a razor-thin advantage. His Toyota GAZOO team-mate Takamoto Katsuta was just three seconds adrift and reigning champion Thierry Neuville was looming large in third.
Despite briefly losing the lead, Elfyn kept his cool to bag maximum points in what was a nail-biting final-day shoot-out.
“It’s been a very good weekend,” he admitted at the finish. “Championship-wise. It’s been a very positive start. Obviously it’s very early days but I don’t think you could wish for much better than this.”
Like both Evans and Martin, Rowland is a beneficiary of Motorsport UK’s Academy, established specifically to unlock the full potential for talented young racing and rallying athletes.
Having made it to the fringes of F1, the 32-year-old Yorkshireman is now starting his sixth full season in Formula E after finishing fourth overall in 2024. And, thus far, the Nissan racer has been the man to beat.
But for a poorly-timed red flag, he would almost certainly have won the opener in Brazil. Unphased, Rowland then made up for that disappointment with a stirring victory in Mexico.
Last weekend’s double-header in Jeddah also had its ups and downs. Rowland was on target to win the first race but, with energy running low on the final lap, he had to slow down and settle for second. An improved strategy, though, took Oliver to a dominant victory in the second showdown.
“I dropped back early to make the most of the slipstream to save some energy which was the perfect scenario,” explained the new series leader. “It’s amazing to be leading the championship but our focus is on taking it race-by-race and doing our best to be in good position at the end of the season.”
It was the first time in Formula E history that a trio of British drivers had locked out the podium. Congratulations to all!
