Scotland for the brave!

Friday 09 August 2024

There’s a big weekend ahead for Scottish motorsport with both the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship and Probite British Rally Championship heading north of the border.

The BTCC arrives at Knockhill with the title race hotting up. After 18 of 30 rounds, 2022 champion Tom Ingram holds a slender lead in the points standings over Jake Hill, with defending champion Ash Sutton also in contention for what would be a record-breaking fifth premier league tin-top crown.

There’s plenty of local interest, too. Both Aiden Moffat and Ronan Pearson have stood on the top step of the rostrum already this season and both will be gunning for further successes on home soil.

While the three BTCC showdowns will grab the headlines, the non-stop support race programme will ensure a great weekend’s racing on the spectacular Knockhill track.

The ROKiT British F4 Championship rejoins the touring car bill after a two-event absence with rising star Deagen Fairclough looking to extend his series lead over fellow young guns Alex Ninovic and Jack Sherwood.

Providing further variety in the Scottish hills, the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain, MINI Challenge and ever-popular Legends are also on the action-packed racecard.

Moving further north, the rejuvenated BRC switches back to gravel with crews contesting the super-fast and flowing stages of the Voyonic Grampian Forest Rally in Kincardineshire.

Based just 15 miles west of Aberdeen near the town of Banchory, the rally has a new two-day format for 2024 with the first two timed sections held this evening (Friday).

To date the opening three rounds have been shared between three different drivers – Chris Ingram, Osian Pryce and Keith Cronin – but the series lead is held by the ever-consistent William Creighton who has finished runner-up in all three rallies.

Once again, local drivers will also be in contention. Garry Pearson has lots of previous event experience which should give him and co-driver Daniel Barritt a head start. And a Scottish rally wouldn’t be a Scottish rally without McRae family involvement.

While promising young Max McRae will be furthering his experience among the top level BRC competitors, his grandfather Jimmy McRae will be celebrating his 50th anniversary in the sport. The five-time British Rally Champion will be behind the wheel of an iconic Ford Escort MK1 with the number 50 on its doors.

With two hotly-contested British championships in the land of the brave, this really is a special weekend for Scottish race and rally fans to relish.
