EcoRally Scotland returns, with spaces still available for an electric-introduction to the North Coast 500

Friday 26 July 2024

This August, the Scottish Motor Racing Club (SMRC) will again be organising EcoRally Scotland, from Thursday 22 to Friday 23 August, a Candidate Event for the Bridgestone FIA EcoRally Cup.

Starting and finishing in Inverness, the route for this second edition totals approximately 420 miles and takes in much of the famously scenic ‘North Coast 500’.

The event will see teams of two (driver and navigator) and their Electric Vehicle, tackle a road route around the beautiful Scottish North Highland countryside. Teams will need to record all check points within the given times and complete ‘regularity tests’ checking average speed along the route – precision navigating, problem solving and teamwork is the aim of the game!

Participants can take part in a fully electric (BEV) or hybrid vehicle (HEV), both driver and navigator will need a Motorsport UK RS Clubman Licence (or equivalent from another ASN); this is free and easy to obtain here.  Ethanol or Methane powered vehicles (E85/CNG/CBG) are also eligible.

Any road electric vehicle can take part in the event, without any kind of modification.

Entries to the event will cost £495 / team (two people) and includes Breakfast at Fairways in Inverness, lunch in Lochinver, Two-Course Dinner, Bed & Breakfast at the Premier Inn in Thurso (based on two people sharing a Double/Twin room), stewarding and marshal support on the course with prizes available for the top three teams.

Nic Boyes, Chairman, SMRC, comments, “Our EcoRally event is designed as a welcome introduction to grassroots motorsport at its finest, with the North Coast 500 providing an iconic backdrop for an action-packed couple of days. We hope our event will prove to be inclusive and challenge any stereotypes and perceptions that electric vehicles can’t also be used to enjoy our sport.”

Richard Crozier, Rallies Assistant Scotland, adds, “Scottish rallying is steeped in great history and it’s important we capitalise on our heritage to ensure a sustainable future for the discipline in Scotland and beyond. It’s thanks to events such as the EcoRally from the SMRC that our sport continues to evolve and attract new talent.”
