FIA Formula 2 Silverstone: Bearman seeking Silverstone success

Wednesday 05 July 2023

The FIA Formula 2 Championship has had a huge number of British stars move through its ranks in previous years, most notably the 2018 season, which saw current Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell take the title ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Alex Albon (Williams).

This season there is just one British driver on the grid, but Oliver Bearman’s stellar karting record and strong early results in single-seater racing put him firmly in contention to follow in the footsteps of the British Formula 1 stars of today.

Motorsport UK Academy Team UK member Bearman, who is also on the Ferrari Driver Academy, finished third in FIA F3 with Prema last season – featuring a podium at Silverstone – and has made a solid graduation to F2 with the Italian team.

A double victory on the streets of Baku and another win in Barcelona have been the highlights of the 2021 Italian F4 champion’s season so far. A remarkable drive from the back of the grid to 11th in Monaco also turned heads – as did his drive from 19th to eighth in last weekend’s damp/drying Sprint Race at the Red Bull Ring.

Bearman is currently fourth in the championship in what is shaping up to be a very close title fight, currently led by Frederik Vesti.

The F2 competitors take to the track on Friday morning for practice, with the 30-minute qualifying session later that afternoon. The top 10 from qualifying are reversed to determine the starting lineup for Saturday’s 21-lap Sprint Race, while the 29-lap Feature Race on Sunday morning is based on fastest times alone. Every session is live on Sky Sports F1 in the UK.
