Whilst it proved to be a frustrating trip to Latin America for the British contingent in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, Pascal Wehrlein celebrated both his and TAG Heuer Porsche’s first victory in the all-electric single seater series.

ABB FIA Formula E World Championship – Mexico City, Mexico 

Pascal Wehrlein claimed his and Porsche’s first victory in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, leading home team-mate Andre Lotterer in a topsy-turvy ePrix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. 

Wehrlein stormed to pole position earlier on Saturday ahead of the main event and fended off fellow front-row starter Edoardo Mortara (ROKiT Venturi) on the run down to the first corner. 

Mortata, the current championship leader rallied and took the lead at the start of lap seven as both Wehrlein and Lotterer receded back into the pack. Their energy efficiency, whilst keeping pace with the front-runners, would be telling and the duo returned to the front late on before stretching out a nine-second advantage – and an extra lap – to seal a historic top two result for Porsche. 

Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Techeetah) had strong race pace and at one stage looked a possible contender for victory. Having dropped from second behind Mortara to fourth after the late-race Porsche surge, Vergne was able to pass the championship leader and claim the final spot on the podium. 

Vergne’s team-mate Antonio Felix da Costa did likewise to bring a slightly second-hand DS Techeetah into fourth. A fifth-place finish was enough for Mortara to retain the lead in the championship. 

What had looked a tremendous recovery drive by the British contingent swiftly turned into a nightmare, as Porsche’s strategy to extend the race by an additional lap caught several drivers – among them Oliver Rowland (Mahindra) and Sam Bird (Jaguar) – out. 

They dropped back from the fringes of the top ten on the final lap, but their misfortune did allow Jake Dennis (Andretti) to come through the pack and claim the final points-paying position in tenth. 

The series reconvenes in Rome, Italy with another double header to kick off the European leg of the season on 9-10 April.
