Weekend Review: 1 – 3 October 2021

Monday 04 October 2021

The rain didn’t stop play for drivers at the weekend. Here’s your latest debrief from some of the motorsport events that took place across the UK and abroad.

Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship – Pokerstars Rally

Jason Pritchard won big on the PokerStars Rally, taking maximum Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship points on both Legs 1 and 2, setting the fastest time on every stage and winning the double-header round of the series by 5mins 20.9secs.

The Isle of Man weather threw everything at competitors, but Jason sailed off into the distance on Friday night to open up a 2mins 51.7secs gap after Leg 1. Heavy rain on Saturday morning for the opening loop of Leg 2’s daylight stages helped to keep Jason’s mind focused on the job, whilst the ever-changing surface conditions caused even more drivers behind to go off.

The results move Jason from 11th to third in the overall drivers’ standings. Still, with the two drivers ahead of him needing to drop a score, the double Protyre Asphalt champion has a slight advantage heading into the final round.

Mark Kelly finished a brilliant runner-up after an excellent drive in his Flext-backed Ford Fiesta R5+, scoring second place points on both Friday and Saturday to move him into the overall lead of the series at his first attempt. But many crews failed to make it to the finish, and surprisingly the first to hit problems were Melvyn Evans/Mark Glennerster. Leading the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship coming into Round 3, they locked up approaching a tight corner three-quarters of the way through the opening stage. They hit a bridge, breaking a wheel on their Škoda Fabia R5+ and retired.

The fifth and final round of the 2021 Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship is the Ford Parts Cheviot Stages Rally, held over the Otterburn military range in Northumberland, on Sunday 24 October.

British Sprint Championship – Rounds 25 & 26 at Anglesey Circuit

The British Sprint Championship headed West at the weekend for the Welsh double-header at the Anglesey National Circuit. On Saturday, Simon Bainbridge took his first-ever run-off win but struggled with understeer on day two. Pete Goulding also added another win to his name in an attempt to secure second place overall, and on Sunday, Matt Hillam took a double run-off win. The British Sprint Championship heads to Castle Combe in three weeks. Keep up with the latest updates here.

British Autotest Championship – Round 5 Demon Tweeks

Alistair Moffatt already conquered the 2021 Championship, but the battle for second and third headed into the final round on Sunday. Did last year’s champion Malcolm Livingstone manage to hold on to second place, or did Scotsman Willie Keaning time his manoeuvres perfectly? Stay tuned to Facebook for the imminent results!

British Sporting Trials Championship – Peter Fear Trial in Pauntley

The British Sporting Trials Championship competitors reconvene for the Peter Fear Trial in Pauntley on Sunday. At the last round, Andy Wilks successfully made his way across the slippery and challenging course to secure the top spot, but did he maintain his winning streak? Stay tuned to the British Sporting Trials page for the latest results.

FIA World Rally Championship – WRC Secto Automotive Rally Finland

Motorsport UK Academy graduates Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin stormed to victory at Secto Rally Finland, winning by 14.1 seconds and becoming only the second British crew ever to win the rally in the championship’s history. Elfyn keeps his hopes of a maiden FIA World Rally Championship title alive, sitting just 24 points behind Sébastien Ogier with two rounds to go.

The WRC returns to asphalt for the penultimate round at RallyRACC Rally de España on 14 – 17 October. Get the latest news here.
