Closer to home

Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship – Round 16, 17 & 18 at Thruxton

Ash Sutton cemented his championship lead after taking his fourth victory of the season at Thruxton on Sunday. But the early spoils went to the new undisputed king of the Hampshire speedbowl as Josh Cook won the opener – his seventh top step success in his previous six visits to Thruxton. And after an incident-packed finale that saw three safety car periods, Adam Morgan defended Colin Turkington to take a lights-to-flag victory.

An incident between Gordon Shedden and Jade Edwards from Race 3 at Thruxton is under review, while one involving Josh Cook and Tom Ingram will also be looked at alongside several other cars following the first safety car restart.

F4 British Championship certified by the FIA – Rounds 16, 17 & 18 at Thruxton

Oliver Gray soaked up race-long pressure to take victory in Round 18, his second of the weekend but first ‘on the road’, after expertly managing the race to lead from start to finish. Gray’s race results from Thruxton propel him back into the thick of the title fight and secures Fortec Motorsport’s position at the top of the Teams’ Cup standings.

Gray also claimed Round 16 victory after Matias Zagazeta had received a one-second penalty for gaining an unfair advantage whilst overtaking Gray for the race lead. Zagazeta failed to appeal against the time penalty successfully. Dougie Bolger also received a time penalty (five seconds) in the weekend opener after causing a collision.

Gray’s teammate Joel Gransfors claimed a maiden victory in an action-packed reverse grid race to end the opening day at Thruxton.

The F4 British Championship heads next to Croft, Yorkshire, over 18-19 September 2021.

Motorsport UK British Superkart Championship – Round 3 at Cadwell Park

The final race of the British Superkart Championship is over. Sam Moss was the one to watch in Sunday’s race as the Division One title battle between Moss, Lee Harphen, and Ross Allen heated up. The trio switched position throughout the race, but Sam managed to build a two-second gap between himself and Harpham to take the victory.

F250 National driver Lee Plain once again led the class ahead of the #56 kart of Michael Goff. In his final weekend race, Plain recorded a best lap time of 1.26.526, four seconds ahead of runner-up Parr. Charles Johnson stormed ahead to victory in the F450 National race and finished the championship within the top ten.

With his past F125 class achievements, multiple race winner Tom Riley had expected to claim another pole position, but an unfortunate spin off the track handed his closest competitor Michael Parr the race win.

Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship – Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally

Melvyn Evans charged to victory on the opening round of the 2021 Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship by taking his Škoda Fabia R5 to a stunning win on The Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally.

An early morning tyre choice of medium Michelin Pilot Sport rubber gave him an immediate advantage over Jason Pritchard and Damian Cole, who had gone for softer compound Pirelli tyres. And when Jason and Damian’s tyres went off, Melvyn charged into an early 19-second lead. His lead extended to 20 seconds after setting a fourth consecutive stage win, before Jason pulled the gap back to 17 seconds by taking one second off the leader on each of the next three stages. But a stunning performance on the final two stages, which at 11.96 miles were the longest of the rally, saw Melvyn win the Mewla Rally for the second time in his career by 26 seconds.

There is now a speedy turnaround. Round 2 of the 2021 Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship, the Cheltenham Motor Club-organised Hills Ford Three Shires Stages Rally, takes place next Sunday.

Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship – Round 3 at Pembrey

Rounds three and four of the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy Presented by Cooper Tires saw glorious racing in the Welsh sunshine over the bank holiday weekend.  Six champions from three classes headed the Supercar entry, with a strong line-up across the other classes for rounds three and four.

In round three of the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship, six-time champion Julian Godfrey (Ford Fiesta) showed his class with a dominant performance from pole. Semi-final two winner Roberts Vitols was the sensation of the day with some superb passes, including a move up the inside of Steve Hill (Mitsubishi Evo), but the Latvian couldn’t quite close the gap to the leader and eventual winner. 2007 champion Ollie O’Donovan brought his Ford Fiesta home in third ahead of Welshman Roger Thomas (Ford Fiesta), who recovered superbly to take fourth on his home event.

Motorsport UK Drift Pro Championship – Round 2 at Donington Park

The second round of the Motorsport UK Drift Pro Championship took place at Tunerfest Midlands at Donington Park on Bank Holiday Monday. Stay tuned for the event results to be published on the website soon.

Overseas…

W Series – Round 5 at Spa-Francorchamps

Emma Kimiläinen overtook the top two drivers in the W Series championship standings to win a breathless fifth race of the 2021 season at a rain-soaked Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and move into title contention.

The 32-year-old started fourth on the grid but earned the second victory of her W Series career by passing defending champion Jamie Chadwick and Alice Powell to score a dominant victory by 8.4 seconds in Belgium. Emma is now third in the championship standings on 60 points, 31 behind leader Jamie with three rounds remaining. Jamie finished second to extend her advantage over Alice – who finished fourth – to seven points at the top of the table.

FIA Formula 3 – Round 5 at Spa-Francorchamps

Jack Doohan came to Spa with a 63 point-deficit to Dennis Hauger in the standings. He left Belgium having reduced the gap to 25 points, thanks to a pole position and two wins. He impressed the field and put pressure on his title rival, whose weekend was oddly poor. With only two rounds left in the season, it will be fascinating to see if Doohan can keep his momentum through next weekend in Zandvoort.

FIA Formula 1 Rolex Belgian Grand Prix – Round 12 at Spa-Francorchamps

Relentless rain equalled poor visibility and led to the shortest Grand Prix in history. But Motorsport UK Academy graduate George Russell, who is known as Mr Saturday for his supremely quick and consistent qualifying form, was one of the few winners this weekend, having converted his front row start into a P2 finish after a shortened race behind the safety car.
