At the heart of UK motorsport sits our passionate volunteers who deliver the sport week in, week out. The volunteer officials’ community is UK motorsport’s greatest asset and many of you proudly represent that community nationally and internationally, providing a benchmark that others aspire to.

History was made this year at the FORMULA 1 LENOVO BRITISH GRAND PRIX 2022 as Nadine Lewis, Chair of the British Marshals Motorsport Club, presented the P2 trophy to Sergio Perez.

Nadine exemplifies the spirit of the volunteer community that are so dedicated and committed to motorsport. In front of thousands in the stands and millions around the world, there was no grander stage for her to proudly represent you all, highlighting the importance of your commitment.

Further history was made this year as Silverstone broke its attendance record. The circuit welcomed 142,000 spectators on Sunday with a total figure of 401,000 across the weekend.

British sports fans are passionate, loud and always back the Brits. The support on every grandstand and on every bank for Sir Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris and George Russell this weekend was very special. The roar of the crowd each and every time they went by was something to behold. The trio are fabulous ambassadors for our sport, delivering on the track and devoting time to their legions of fans.

The Grand Prix itself was scintillating with many talking points.

The first lap incident at Abbey, that resulted in a red flag, showcased the importance of the safety measures that the FIA have implemented in this modern generation of cars. George, Pierre Gasly and Zhou Guanyu were involved in an incident that resulted in the Chinese driver flipping upside down and sliding for a considerable distance before crashing into the catch fence. Seeing George rush to Zhou’s aid immediately after the crash showed his compassion and character in full effect. The importance of the Halo as a safety device was demonstrated once again and thankfully Zhou was later declared fit and well.

We were delighted to see Alex Albon also given the all clear and discharged from Coventry Hospital after he went nose first into the pit-wall.

The work done by the Track Safety Team and Marshals to react, ensuring the drivers were safe was exemplary and you should all feel very proud.

We’re all looking forward to seeing Zhou and Alex out on the track again.

After the re-start, the race that played out was fantastic and one of the most exciting at Silverstone in recent years. The cheer of the crowd when Hamilton passed Leclerc and the raw emotion of Carlos Sainz taking his first victory at the 150th time of asking are moments that will last a lifetime.

Sir Lewis’ success bodes well for the rest of the season and his fans have much to look forward to. George will be back stronger, racing with the recent Mercedes upgrades and Lando is making great strides in the McLaren.

In the W Series, a quarter of the grid was made up of British drivers and there was plenty for the home crowd to cheer about. Jamie Chadwick’s lights-to-flag victory was highly impressive. She is a leading light and the one to beat in the 2022 championship. One year ago Abbi Pulling made her W Series at Silverstone and back then her rise seemed inevitable. She took the final step on the podium and is a star in the making.

Jessica Hawkins, Abbie Eaton and Sarah Moore all marked their home races with points in sixth, seventh and tenth respectively.

There was further British joy in FIA Formula 3. Zak O’Sullivan and Ollie Bearman, two exciting home-grown talents, showcased their skillsets in F3, providing great excitement in the Feature Race, taking P2 and P3 respectively. Stepping onto the podium after any race is an honour but to do it at your home circuit is special. They both have bright futures ahead of them.

The British Grand Prix is one of the most challenging and complex sporting events to organise and deliver. At the heart of it all is our family of volunteers, without whom the event would not be possible.  It was a pleasure to welcome back so many faces, meet new ones and personally feel your love and enjoyment for motorsport.

You put everything into delivering your roles and we cannot thank you enough. Your contribution has been invaluable, ensuring a highly successful and historic British Grand Prix that will live long in the memories of thousands.

You were at the forefront of it all and we are immensely grateful for your hard work, service and commitment to motorsport.
