Up To Speed: 9 – 10 July 2022

Friday 08 July 2022

Following the excitement of last week’s British Grand Prix, this weekend is all about the return of the British Rally Championship. Dust will fill the air as it will be an action packed weekend full of rallying from the Nicky Grist Stages. Let’s not forget about over 100 grassroots motorsport events also happening this weekend.

Let’s get up to speed on the weekend ahead.

Around the Clubs

There are plenty of grassroots motorsport events taking place this weekend, with Falcon Motor Club running their ‘Coffee and Cake Run’  touring assembly from Fosters Booth, and the MG Car Club running the ‘South Downs Windmill Run’ near Brighton.

Sunday will see over 80 drivers tackle Staffordshire’s Curborough Sprint Course in Shenstone and District Car Club’s Double Lap Championship Sprint. Further South, this weekend also sees the Summer Stages taking place at Ronez in Jersey, organised by the Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club.

Nicky Grist Stages – British Rally Championship and Welsh Rally Championship

The British Rally Championship heads west this weekend for the Nicky Grist Stages.  Based in Builth Wells, the popular event will see a strong entry of 160-cars take on legendary Welsh stages such as Crychan and Halfway.

Four-time British Rally Champion Keith Cronin, and co-driver Mikie Galvin, lead the championship standings into the third round, with Welshman Osian Pryce returning to the series following a disappointing end to June’s Jim Clark Rally. Pryce and co-driver Noel O’Sullivan will be carrying the number 100 on their Polo GTI R5 to celebrate Pryce’s 100th rally start.

In the Welsh Rally Championship, Matthew Hirst and co-driver Declan Dear will be looking to maintain their perfect score, having won all three championship rounds so far this year. The Nicky Grist Stages is one of Hirst’s favourite events although he has never had a clean run during this event.

Local driver Jason Pritchard will be strong competition in his first gravel rally in 10 years when he competes at the Nicky Grist Stages this weekend. This is Pritchard’s home rally which has stages in Llyn Login, Monument, Halfway, and Crychan forests. For more information, visit nickygriststages.co.uk.
