StreetCar: Even more opportunities to get involved in motorsport
For Liam Brotherhood, aged 15 from from Cannock and District Car, competing in AutoSOLOs runs in the family. Inspired by his dad, Liam has had a successful season, with the club and continues to progress in his own motorsport journey.
Cannock and District Car Club is one of Motorsport UK’s nationwide network of StreetCar clubs – making grassroots motorsport even more accessible for anyone who wants to try it out for themselves.
Launched in 2022, StreetCar was created to demonstrate that motorsport is affordable and accessible to all, encouraging more people to get behind the wheel and enjoy the sport. There are now 67 clubs that are part of the StreetCar community across the country.
StreetCar provides the opportunity to take part in a variety of disciplines, including Autotest, Rally and Trials and Cross Country events. From Treasure Hunts to Navigational Rally and Historic Rally events, all 12 disciplines can be enjoyed with a standard unmodified road car.
How old were you when you first joined Cannock and District Car Club?
I was 12 when I first joined the club, following my Dad. I used to sit in with him as passenger while he competed, and I decided I wanted to join too.
Why did you decide to get into AutoSOLOs?
I decided to get into AutoSOLOs because it was something I used to watch all the time. My Dad used to compete, and I used to come and watch him. When I turned 12, I was able to passenger with him and then when I turned 14, I could compete myself. It was also something I liked as I’ve always wanted to drive and now, I had the chance to try it out.
How has competing in AutoSOLOs improved your ability to handle a car?
Competing in AutoSOLOs has really improved my ability to handle a car, as it has taught me how a car can behave at different speeds, including factors like weight transfer and how to react quickly if a car should step out of line.
How have you progressed in your second year of competition?
In my second year of competition, I’ve progressed well, winning a few fastest junior awards and coming second in Class B. I feel as if I have become faster in my times, and more confident on the tests.
What are your hopes for the future within grassroots motorsport?
My hopes for the future of grassroots motorsport is for it to gain exposure, become larger and last, as it’s a fun, safe and relatively cheap way of having a great time in a car without the dangers of the road.
What is your biggest achievement within the AutoSOLO discipline so far?
My biggest achievement so far would have to be coming 2nd in Class B. Our Club runs a series for the year with all the different classes, those who are the fastest, win. I have also won fastest junior on the day of the AutoSOLO a few times before.
