Motorsport UK Safeguarding Review Statement

Tuesday 22 October 2024

Following the conviction and sentencing of Michael Kellard in December 2023 (statement available HERE) Motorsport UK committed to conducting a full review of the matter and the actions available to the organisation.

Motorsport UK commissioned LimeCulture, a UK national Safeguarding organisation based in the UK, to conduct the review which has now concluded.

This review aimed to ensure that Motorsport UK’s Safeguarding activities and practices are appropriate, proportionate, and in compliance with government legislation and best practice guidelines.

The review had a particular focus on Karting but recognised that there are additional learnings across the sport.

The review recognises that Motorsport UK’s Safeguarding function has been extended, and there is a clear commitment to develop and improve Safeguarding across the sport. The review makes a number of recommendations to enhance current Safeguarding arrangements.

These recommendations have been shared with Farrer and Co, a leading law firm who specialise in Safeguarding. Farrer and Co provided advice to Motorsport UK to assist with the implementation of the recommendations, specifically in relation to the legal powers and jurisdiction available to Motorsport UK.

The review document from Farrer and Co is available HERE. This advice has been used to prioritise the recommendations and to develop deliverable actions that will ensure the ongoing safety of children who participate in the sport that is within Motorsport UK’s control.

The safety and wellbeing of our community continues to be Motorsport UK’s highest priority.  Participant safety and welfare is a key pillar of our strategy to inspire and enable more people to participate in our sport in a safe, fair, fun, inclusive and progressive environment. If you are worried about the behaviours of those involved in motorsport (regardless of when actions may have occurred) please contact the Safeguarding Team: safeguarding@motorsportuk.org.
