Race for Diversity relaunches to diversify paddocks across the UK

Friday 11 October 2024

Today, Motorsport UK is relaunching its Race for Diversity programme at a celebratory launch event at Thinktank in Birmingham.

During the event, experts from across the motorsport sector will share their experiences and advice, chaired by presenter Ariana Bravo.

Following the success of Motorsport UK’s research and pilot events from 2023 onwards, supported by Sir Lewis Hamilton’s Mission 44 charity, the relaunch seeks to promote next chapter of this transformative journey and diversify paddocks across the UK.

The programme aims to increase the participation and involvement of 14 to 24-year-olds from Black, Asian, minority ethnic groups and economically disadvantaged backgrounds through inspirational STEAM interventions, in motorsport.

During 2024 the programme has engaged with 300 students across the UK, at a variety of school activations in addition to in-situ experience during events at Silverstone Formula Student, Goodwood Revival and Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Working with up to five schools across four key locations; London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester, the programme seeks to help young people find a supportive and collaborative environment that fosters and encourages their passion for the sport.

Research from the Hamilton Commission states that less than 1% of those working in Formula 1 are from Black backgrounds. Motorsport UK has found that licence holders from ethnically diverse backgrounds make up below 3% of its total membership.

Evelkah Powell, Race for Diversity Manager comments, “This isn’t just another diversity initiative; rather, it drives the legacy and impact of motorsport. By engaging and inspiring talent at an early stage, we can work towards creating a more inclusive, safe, fun, and diverse motorsport industry.”
