Norris and Tandy fly the flag for UK motorsport
By any standards, it was a standout out weekend for British motorsport. While Lando Norris withstood pressure from reigning champion Max Verstappen to win the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Nick Tandy was making history in Florida.
The 40-year-old hit the headlines back in January with his maiden victory in the Daytona 24 Hours, thus becoming the first driver to win all four of the world’s premier 24 hour races at Le Mans, Spa, Nürburgring and Daytona.
With his latest success Tandy has again etched himself into the history books this time by becoming the first driver to win endurance racing’s ‘big six’ – a remarkable roster which also includes Sebring and Petit Le Mans. Incredibly, all those victories have come with Porsche.
Adding to his amazing achievements, Tandy has joined a very select group of just ten drivers to have claimed overall wins in international sportscar racing’s three most prestigious endurance races: the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Rolex 24 At Daytona and now the Twelve Hours of Sebring – the last two of those coming this year.
“You rarely see a sports team or operation that does a single event without any faults or mistakes, and we’ve just celebrated with 40 people who have flawlessly run a car for 36 hours at Daytona and Sebring combined,” said Tandy. “Just a testament to what Porsche and Penske have put together to allow us to go racing. It’s just incredible that we’ve had this run the last two events.
“The ‘Triple Crown’ is probably one of the more historic accomplishments or accolades,” he added. “You look at the names of the people on that list that you are linked with, and that’s an unbelievable thing.” Two other Britons are on that exalted list – Jackie Oliver and Andy Wallace – along with legends such as Dan Gurney, A. J. Foyt and Jacky Ickx.
Adding to British celebrations down under in Australia, Norris was joined on the F1 podium by fellow countryman George Russell, while Luke Browning was on the podium in Formula 2.
All three are prominent graduates of Motorsport UK’s Academy, the successful performance pathway providing future stars with the skills and opportunities to unlock their full potential.
