Callum Ilott makes IndyCar race debut on Sunday
Motorsport UK Academy Team UK driver Callum Ilott will make his IndyCar race debut in the competitive NTT IndyCar Series at Portland International Raceway on Sunday racing for Juncos Hollinger Racing.
The 22-year-old has already had his first taste of American racing in the #77 Chevrolet at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during a Juncos Hollinger Racing test at the start of the month. He will contest the team’s first of three IndyCar entries of the 2021 season.
From the moment Callum was crowned British Karting Championship in 2011, the sport pegged him as one-to-watch. At age 16, he was the first driver to be taken directly from karts to the 2015 FIA F3 European Championship with Red Bull. That season, Callum was the only driver on the grid to finish all 33 races and claimed one podium in the process.
Over the next two seasons, the Brit continued developing and building up his reputation as a formidable competitor. And in 2018, the hard work paid dividends when he joined the Ferrari Driver Academy. In the same year, Callum completed a year’s stint in the GP3 Series, accomplishing two wins, seven podium finishes and one pole position to finish third in the driver’s battle before stepping up into the FIA Formula 2 Championship.
He finished runner up to Mick Schumacher in the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship, clocking up three wins, six podium finishes and five pole positions. Most recently, the Ferrari F1 test driver and Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN F1 reserve driver finished third in the LMGTE AM class at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans with Iron Lynx.
The Grand Prix of Portland practice kicks off on Saturday morning, followed by qualifying, with race coverage live on Sunday at 3 pm EST. You can watch it live on NBC or follow the action on the INDYCAR Radio Network.
