Motorsport UK: Technical Compliance in Historic Racing
Motorsport UK is fully committed to upholding the integrity of historic motorsport, including the preservation of authenticity, fairness, and compliance to ensure a sustainable future for the community.
Motorsport UK is aligned with Goodwood, Motor Racing Legends and Masters Historic Racing and recognise a need to align technical regulations and ensure a consistent approach with eligibility scrutineering at events. This collaborative approach strengthens the foundations of historic motorsport by prioritising period correctness over performance development, preventing unfair advantages, and ensuring that competition remains true to the spirit of the sport.
Competitors, preparers and organisers have a collective responsibility to ensure the historical accuracy of racing vehicles and technical compliance.
This season, the primary focus will be on ensuring that all cars strictly comply with their HTPs and/or period homologation. Eligibility scrutineers will rigorously enforce this requirement, and where necessary, the “red dot” system will be implemented to maintain consistency across all events, regardless of the organiser.
Scrutiny will be given to key areas known to have been subject to unauthorised development in recent years, including exhaust manifolds, dampers, anti-roll bars, clutch assemblies, brake calipers and pads, slave cylinders, suspension geometry, ignition systems, and engine capacities. Additionally, out-of-period components, lightweight materials, and modern adaptations will be actively identified and addressed.
Motorsport UK will continue to work closely with our partners to provide robust scrutiny, promote compliance, and uphold fair play in all areas of historic motorsport. We encourage all participants to embrace this initiative and contribute to the preservation of historic motorsport for future generations.
Roger Wills, Chair of the Historic Committee and Board Director, commented, “Historic motorsport has seen a huge arms race in recent years with overdevelopment and the creep of modern technology into historic vehicles. This has resulted in an unsustainable escalation of costs, and we must all work together to roll back the performance of these wonderful cars towards their period specification.
“Historic motorsport is built on the foundation of authenticity, fairness, and respect for the cars and their history. Motorsport UK is happy to have supported an alignment of positions across several key historic race organisers and stands firmly behind Goodwood, Motor Racing Legends and Masters Historic Racing, to ensure that technical compliance is rigorously upheld.
“We urge all competitors, preparers and engine builders to embrace this commitment, ensuring that historic racing remains true to its heritage and spirit.”
