Easter joy for British racers overseas
It was a very happy Easter weekend for British racing drivers Arvid Lindblad, Ella Lloyd and James Calado.
What’s more, rising star Lindblad – aged just 17 and 243 days – made motorsport history when becoming the youngest-ever winner of a Formula 2 race with a milestone victory in the Sprint Race on the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix bill.
The super impressive Red Bull Junior rookie surged through the pack from sixth on the grid to grab second place and then inherited the spoils when first-past-the-post, Richard Verschoor, was handed a five-second penalty for forcing a rival off track.
“It means a lot, I hadn’t even thought about the record,” admitted London-born Lindblad, who is the youngest driver in the F2 field. “I got a good start and was quite competitive in the early laps, I was chasing down Verschoor. Unfortunately, he got a penalty so not the way I want to win, but super happy with the result and super happy to break another record.”
Lloyd’s win also came in a reverse grid Sprint Race at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, this time in the F1 ACADEMY. Starting from the front row, she outpaced her Rodin Motorsport team-mate Emma Felbermayr to the first corner and then, despite added pressure from a Safety Car restart, held on to score her maiden victory since joining McLaren to contest the female-only series.
“My plan was to lead into Turn 1 and that’s what I’ve done, pretty happy with myself for that. Then just be consistent and I think my race was pretty consistent,” reported the 19-year-old who will be competing in the opening round of the Wera Tools British Formula 4 Championship at Donington Park this weekend. “I had quite a big gap at the start and then the Safety Car came out, obviously the field caught back up. I dealt with it quite well, kept calm, no mistakes and just kept pushing to the end.”
Calado’s success came with Ferrari team-mates Pier Guidi and Antonio Giovinazzi in the 6 Hours of Imola, round two of the 2025 World Endurance Championship – a hugely popular victory in front of the Italian tifosi who had turned out in force to support the Prancing Horse.
“This is one of the finest wins of my career, because I’d never stood on the top step of the podium in front of our own tifosi before,” enthused a delighted Calado, whose previous win with Ferrari came at the 24 Hours of Le Mans back in 2023. “It’s an incredible feeling and I’m proud we managed to return to winning ways after such a long time – and to do it here at home.”
Both Lindblad and Calado are graduates of the Motorsport UK Academy initiative while Lloyd is following in their wheel-tracks as a current member of Team UK… as is last year’s F1 ACADEMY champion Abbi Pulling.
Pulling’s prize is a fully-funded drive in this year’s GB3 Championship, a series which blasts off on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit this weekend.
