Dept. For Transport and DVLA call for evidence on the registration of historic, classic, and rebuilt vehicles
Motorsport UK has been invited to respond to a call for evidence from the Department for Transport (DfT) and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to gather views on how classic and historic cars can be preserved for future generations and boost jobs in the £18 billion classic car sector.
This call for evidence provides a great opportunity for motorists and enthusiasts to play a key role in preserving examples of British motoring and engineering excellence.

Motorsport UK as the recognised national membership organisation and governing body of four-wheel motorsport in the UK (by act of parliament) and the National representative of the world governing body the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), publishes and maintains technical and safety regulations, through a structured process of governance, that underpin all permitted competition in the UK.
Motorsport safety regulations (for vehicles that continue to be used on the road), do not invalidate vehicle type approval and should not invalidate individual vehicle’s original registration details.
The Motorsport UK National Competition Regulations include a safety framework, governed by committee, and are derived from the FIA International Sporting Code with full support from the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
This regulatory framework is subject to continual review to ensure the highest level of safety, whilst maintaining a sport that is as accessible as possible to those who want to participate.
Motorsport UK will submit its position to the DVLA ahead of the 4 July deadline and encourages its membership to outline its position.
A draft letter that members can email directly to the DVLA at: cfe.vehicles@dvla.gov.uk is available below.

Dear Vehicle Registration Policy, Call for Evidence Team,
As a Motorsport UK Licence holder, I am supportive of the position communicated to you by Motorsport UK, the governing body of four-wheel motorsport in the UK.
Motorsport UK publishes and maintains technical and safety regulations, through a structured process of governance, that underpin all permitted competition in the UK.
As a Licence holder, the regulations are clear and provide a structure for me to enjoy the sport in a safe, fair, fun, inclusive and progressive environment.
Motorsport UK’s safety regulations (for vehicles that continue to be used on the road), do not invalidate vehicle type approval and should not invalidate individual vehicle’s original registration details.
The Motorsport UK National Competition Regulations include a safety framework, that are governed by expert committees and members, are derived from the FIA International Sporting Code, and supported by Original Equipment Manufacturers.
Motorsport UK’s regulatory framework is under continual review, of which I, and all licence holders, have the right to respond to changes through a thorough consultation process. This ensures the highest level of safety, whilst maintaining a sport that is as accessible as possible to those who want to participate.
Regards,
