Brecon Motor Club: Placing Wales on the map for National Motorsport Week

Monday 29 July 2024

National Motorsport Week might be over, but we are still keen to hear from clubs that span the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, as we celebrate grassroots motorsport and the opportunities that it provides for anyone interested in getting behind the wheel or trying their hand at volunteering or marshalling.

Brecon Motor Club, based out of Wales, has an action-packed events calendar and members that span from ages 14 right up to 80, with an event planned to help celebrate the week and encourage more people to give motorsport a try.

While Brecon Motor Club’s origins may be unclear, the earliest known reports of a hillclimb go back to 1921, with the Brecon topography lending itself well for motorsport. The club came to the fore in the early 1960s with the launch of the Gremlin Rally, before progressing onto events including the club-run Fairfield Motors Epynt Hillclimb, with a huge variety of cars competing from standard road cars to highly tuned specials.

Brecon Motor Club prides itself on its community ethos and commitment to the town of Brecon, having made various donations to local organisations, including Wales Air Ambulance and providing a defibrillator for the town. This spirit is reflected in its membership, with Brecon’s longstanding President and octogenarian, Brian Dennis, receiving the Wilkinson Sword Life Time Achievers Award from the Welsh Association of Motor Clubs.

The club recently held its community event as part of Motorsport UK’s National Motorsport Week on 17 July. Based at Theatre Brycheiniog, Brecon, a range of cars were on display including Malcolm Rish’s Ford Escort, used on the East African Safari Classic.

More information about upcoming events from Brecon Motor Club can be found on their website.
