A day in the life of Jacob Underhill…

Thursday 02 January 2025

It’s been a busy year for Jacob Underhill, who has progressed through the Club100 championship to race with Jack Dex Racing in the Ultimate Kart Championship (UKC) following a podium finish at Llandow Kart Circuit. Jacob placed 9th overall and took top novice in the Mini Inter class, a highly competitive category, which saw him race against top karting talent.

Motorsport UK caught up with Jacob to find out more about his plans for the 2025 season, and to find out more about his progression…

What age did you start karting, and what made you decide to give it a go?

I started karting when I was five years old, my Dad races BPEC and Club100 and I really enjoyed going to his races – so much so, it made me want to have a go!

Which famous drivers inspired you to choose karting over a different sport?

I think Alonso is a fantastic racer, he is consistent and can drive anything. He also loves karting.

What does a typical race day look like for you? Do you have a preferred breakfast?

I wake up early and have a small breakfast of cereal with a cup of tea. I then walk the track with my friends and have a quick kick around, this keeps me relaxed ahead of the racing.

How did it feel progressing from Whilton Mill, can you tell me more about your time racing in Club100?

I learnt a lot at Whilton Mill Juniors and got to improve on wet driving and race craft. I moved to Club100 Cadets in the first year in 2022 and loved every minute of it, the racing is super close and competitive.

How do you feel about racing with Jack Dex Racing in Mini Inter? What did it feel like putting on your helmet on race day?

I was very excited about racing with Jack Dex Racing at the GYG circuit in Wales, Jack was the first person who taught me to drive a Bambino at a Whilton Mill test day.

I felt a little nervous leading up to the big race, but this went away the moment I left the pitlane.

Do you have any advice or tips for anyone considering getting into karting?

My advice would be to try at local indoor tracks and when you feel comfortable, reach out to Club100. They are a good starting point in kart racing. The most important thing is to enjoy yourself and you can make a lot of new friends along the way.
